Medeltidsveckan is a medieval festival in Visby on Gotland. Since 1984 it has grown to an institution attracting an international audience celebrating and reenacting history. The programme offers concerts, plays, talks, tournaments and much more over eight days throughout the scenic historical centre of Visby.
I will attend this year for the first time.
I will bring a prototype of Gotlandia and find a place to set it up. Maybe next to the Swedish championship in Nine Men’s Morris, maybe at Skuggspel (a game store in Visby), maybe at the museum entrance. Time will tell. This year I’m just taking in the scenery and enjoying myself.
Besides watching a jousting tournament with my oldest, I look forward seeing street performances and concerts in the scenic ruins of Visby. Artists like Volund, Tjaut, and Koenix are on the programme. It will also be cool to attend a talk with Dick Harrison, the closest thing to a rockstar Sweden has within popular history.
Medeltidsveckan is an institution with people coming back year after year. When I brought it up in conversations the last few weeks, people either plan to go or know someone who will. Looking forward to take part of the experience. Maybe I too will be bitten and come back year after year. It will be a cool place to launch Gotlandia one day.
