A little hour west of Stockholm lies the small-town Mariefred with the royal palace and museum Gripsholm Castle. Built by Gustav Vasa to fortify his power, later kings favoured Gripsholm as well, not least Gustav III who added a theatre to entertain himself and his court.
Today the scenic castle is a popular destination both for local dog owners and for tourists from near and far. It's an easy walk around the small island with a calming view of Mariefred a short distance across the water. But venture inside and find three floors of royal living quarters elaborately decorated with wood carvings, ornaments, furniture and not least portraits of prominent persons from ages past. Or take a virtual visit.
In nearby Mariefred, a community of railway enthusiasts keep a fleet of narrow gauge trains in working order. During the season you can ride by steam engine on a scenic tour around Lake Mälaren to Taxinge where the famous cake buffet has something for everyone's taste.
On an early autumn Saturday, Gripsholm, Mareifred and Taxinge made for a perfect family day out.
