We spent the week over New Year in Trosa south of Stockholm. Trosa is a scenic small town in the southern end of the Stockholm Archipelago, located where a river runs into the Baltic Sea. Because the town lies at the end of a long road and you have to drive back the same way you came, the locals nicknamed the town World’s End. A name now embraced by the local tourist agency.

Dating back centuries, industrial progress left Trosa behind until it was discovered as a holiday destination for the working class of Stockholm after World War II. Now residential and industrial areas provide modern conveniences and surround the picturesque wooden houses in the town centre.

No longer a place where working class Sweden build their house of their dreams in their weekends, Trosa maintains a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Charming restaurants, cosy cafes, and small shops line the footpaths and narrow streets next to the harbour and river mouth. As an extra bonus, the town is dog friendly: We could bring the dog at all the cafes and restaurants we visited.

The temperature dropped and a couple of hours before midnight on New Year’s Eve it began to snow. When the sky cleared we got beautiful sunshine and snow, perfect weather for exploring a new place!

We did day trips into the archipelago: Stendörren and Nynäs both a little half an hour drive away. Fantastic hikes along snow covered trails leading through forests to stunning views of the archipelago. We brought the camping stove and enjoyed warm noodles for lunch. Kids are old enough to help out with cooking and packing and young enough to still want to play with us. Evenings we enjoyed a good selection of boardgames we brought from home.
Great way to reset the mind and soul for a new year.
