Feed a man for a lifetime — AI version

In a thread on a Swedish forum for tabletop role-players, someone asked for help with dice probabilities. A basic question involving two six-sided dice.

Two replies came in almost instantly with a correct solution supported by mathematical/probability arguments. You can say they “gave a man a fish”, referring to the classic proverb.

I was thinking that the OP asked the question because they were not into probability calculations. So I replied with another way to find the correct solution, using a way to visualise dice probabilities with two dice. My goal was to “teach the man to fish” so the poster might be able to solve other cases on their own next time.

Then yet a reply came in. It was an AI convert who stated that “Chat GPT is really good at this — except if you want to know that the answer is correct.” I guess this was some version of “I have heard there are fish over in the other village”.

GenAI is a tool. It is great for producing complex output from simple input. It’s a black box however and if you care about how the output was created, you may find that the signal-to-noise ratio is not worth your time. Use the right tool for the right task.
