Hard choices and consequences

This week I participated in an amazing team building event. My colleagues and I were tasked with leading Sweden through uncertain times. With accelerating climate change and war at our doorstep, we faced hard choices. Our guide led us through six rooms. Each presented a political choice to be made.

Live actors staged a brief performance illustrating the situation in front of us. Then a video gave context and left us with a choice. Behind us two buttons for us to press one when we had made our decision. This gave the session presence and intensity.

It was made clear that we would never have full information and that time was limited. We would have to make decisions based on the information we had.

Three points that the one hour event highlighted extremely well:

  1. There are no objectively right or wrong choices, only consequences and new choices to be made.
  2. Everyone in the team has a voice and anyone’s argument for or against can sway the entire team.
  3. When we take decisions as a team, we own the consequences as a team.

Many thanks to the organisers at Mångkulterellt Centrum for a thought-provoking experience.
