Södermalm

A friend from Denmark visited with his family. They stayed at a hotel a short walk south west of the centre of Stockholm, which gave me an excuse to further explore Södermalm, the island south of Old Town. I treated them to a guided tour of Stockholm Inner City and the Stockholm Metro, then we explored further on foot.

As the work on the new lock at Slussen is close to completion, exploring Södermalm is an obvious choice after strolling the narrow streets of Stockholm Old Town. Here you will find a rich selection of small shops around Medborgarplatsen as well as scenic streets and city parks with spectacular views of the water.

Södermalm rises steeply from the water and offers excellent views of Stockholm, especially on a warm summer evening. Skinnarviksberget is a popular spot for meeting with friends and enjoying the sunset.

Be prepared to walk uphill and on stairs when you explore Södermalm. Even if you take the elevator called Katarinahissen at Slussen, you will not get far before your next scenic turn takes you up or down some steps.
